		<description>My works are situations.

Situations that involve and evolve in space, with me and with you.
Situations to feel.
Situations for making connections.
Situations that allow vulnerability.
Situations to come together.
Situations that raise questions.
Situations that are often awkward.
Spherical situations, something is in the air.
Situations to relate to with your body.
Situations that relate to your body.
Situations that give and make space.

Francisca Markus (*1995, in Münster GER) lives and works in Deventer, NL.In her work Markus develops performative installations, that explore spaces and their influence on interactions and relationships. With a humorous approach, her works undermine established ways of doing things, both within institutional frameworks and in private moments, and raise questions on connectedness.
Of special interest in her work are food, drinks, (dream) diaries, the everyday, and public space.

Francisca Markus often works collaboratively, in various roles such as facilitator or artist-curator. Her main collective practice is together with the collective Young Valley Soil.

With the Video research Figures For Thoughts I put together in a non narrative way a field of raviours research that encounters amongst others String Theory, Knot theory, the situationist movement, and the very everyday encounter with knotted rubber bands in public space.
Videowork, recommended to see via Phone or Pad, laid down on a flat surface or the floor.&#38;nbsp;
I realised this work during my Erasmus exchange at KHIO, Kunsthogskole i Oslo, and I would like to share at this point the carious materials, and references that were shared with me bz wonderful co-students and teachers:

Ode To Scream and Cry
For the exhibition I am showing the image below printed on silk-satin, 60x90cm. I was doubting weather to produce something for the exhibiton or to show the video that I will be showing at the same time in KhiO at the Resepjongalleri. I decided against that simultaneity of showing the same video that is dealing with space in two different spaces. It would have felt like forcing this simultaneity of space onto the work, which for this work is not key.&#38;nbsp;I wrote this Ode to scream and cry. In the text I write about bats, orientation and relation. I was imagining that this soft silk-satin caresses the feeling of being lost or without orientation. The textile will be hanging in the space and therefor hopefully be readable from one side, and not from the other. It asks to be related with and to.&#38;nbsp;

further information:
https://frappant.org/home/artikel/news/told-you-ill-be-here-forever/collectively written exhibtion text: What has changed about you? Do we still speak the same language? How does friendship work as a long-distance relationship? When we started studying art together, intensive relationships developed in addition to productive exchanges. And now - after social distancing and graduation, after a lot of time has passed and many of us have gone to other places - how do we get back together? And our works? Are they also uncertain at first, suddenly so close, afraid of contact? A web of thoughts and feelings, independent of each other and yet connected. Between voice message and note to ourselves, shared diary and the location of friendship in time and space.

	The exhibition Chatty Matter was split up into two days.

One day was solely a day of buliding up the exhibtion through leaving traces of working on and with our artstic material. We each approached working in a performative improvised way, using brought matter. The artists differ in the interest into matter and brought these differences into this gallery in a sympoetic approach.

On the second day we curated the space with these traces and used this variable setting again as a performative working platform.

	I was showing my videowork in process which I used as base or ground to exmine the materiality but also the matter of elasticity. The video work is showing a collection of photos, that I took in the public space of rubber bands, laying on the floor in different figurations.

The collection includes about 100 photos, that each describe a individual (un)knot figure. The photos are a starting point of a bigger research around string theory, knot theory, space. Along the narratiovn of these rubber bands I collected sound, movement forms and words that now will find their way back into the video. (The videowork will later on result into Figures for Thought)

What is artistic material? And how do we encounter it?Matter means 3 different things to us: Substance, soil, issue.

Our practices combine different disciplines such as live sound, installation, performance and sculpture.The exhibition “Chatty Matter” is a reunion of three artists (Elena Greta Falcini, Francisca Markus and Jozef De Hulsters) at the hundred years gallery in London.

We plan to exhibit material in process as material to be processed, investigated, shared and argued for through a chat with the exhibition visitors. We are curious to start conversations with the audience via our artistic materials triggering and guiding them.

The installation of the exhibition is an improvisation of its own happening while we are gathering our matter with the audience. Therefore we want to involve and be involved in the actual space, and make thoughts visible.

Following the principles of improvisation and experimentation, we want to work with the incomplete. The incomplete as an invitation to the audience to follow the process and maybe even to create new paths for the work.

The incomplete and raw material, deliberately chosen for this occasion out of our pool of artistic materials we usually work with, proposes an eye to eye relationship with the audience, inviting for taking place and part of it. The playful and experimental approach of improvisation challenges to act on a never visited cosmos.

“Chatty Matter” celebrates the moment and the unplanned encounter rather than handicraft or technique. It explores what potential artistic material has when discovered and brought about in direct conversation with the artist.

We need no knowledge, only intuition for the material and the sharing.

This concept was collectively written by Elena Greta Falcini, Francisca Markus, Franziska Windolf and Jozef de Hulsters

	I grew up in a small town called Nottuln, in Germany, close to the (former) high impacting industrial Area Ruhrgebiet. My father grew up in the 60ies 70ies in this Area in different towns and has always been taken us, his family, to different places. So as a child I used to visit old factories a lot, that either had been turned into a museum about for example the labour at the former textile factory or into spaces for art and culture. I was always to very intrigued into visiting these places and fascinated to see the shift in labour, the so triste seeming-like factories and surroundings. As if that made me nostalgic, without having and actual connection to that labour.&#38;nbsp;
When I came to Oslo and visited Khio for the first time I became aware of the buildings past history as the former Chistiania Seildugsfabrik, the Christiania Sailcloth factory. &#38;nbsp;It felt like coming home to me. This building with its bricks in a specific colour, the way of dealing with old and new architecture, the usage of the old building with this vibrant art school... I felt like coming home, as my “home institution”, a term borrowed from the bureaucratic word you have to do for the Erasmus papers, doesn’t feel like home to me. Khio is though not a home, it is a rented place, a temporal allowance to be somewhere.&#38;nbsp;

but this somewhere is a place that was a temporary somewhere to others. I got interested into researching, what role plays the location, next to the river Akerselva? what was labour in Christiania Seildugsfabrik like, and to what and where was it connected.&#38;nbsp;

	You cannot find a lot of research material online, eventhough councils in Norway and of Oslo are digitalizing material as photos.&#38;nbsp;

The research that the labour museum of Oslo had put into is laid out in the labour museum and accessible on english as well, even though when not completely translated. You can see some impressions further down on the page.&#38;nbsp;
As the labour museum emphasized the stories from individuals working at Christiania Seidugsfabrik, I got aware of the individual story from Harriet Kristine Hansen. The only woman that was retracable as female worker in the factory. Who where her colleagues? What was their life like? What were responsibilities? What were their worries, sorrows?&#38;nbsp;
In the further work with Vida, we collaboratively wrote a text that goes into this poetic way of dealing with research around the River Akerselva and it’s deeply connected and influenced way of existence next to this building, where Khio is nowadays situated.&#38;nbsp;

Holding, Forcing, Laying is the peeled skin of&#38;nbsp;Object of forgotten memory.
The core of this work is of intimate matter, an elaboration on embodied traumas, and on the work with them. What seemed interesting to me was to compare embodied traumas to knots, a textile exists out of coherent knots, traumas and emotions as well. This two knots are coherent as well.

One knot is speaking a text, on which this work is based on. I call it Object of forgotten memory.&#38;nbsp;

The other, Holding, Forcing, Laying is a knotted paperinstallation. This knot hangs in the exhibition space, and is held by two knotted yarns, which are hidden by paper objects.

On the paperobject one can, or cannot, reads word which are sewed into the object. The inscribe into the knot the process of un-knotting. A list of ambiguous verbs is winds itself along the knot. maybe unthreadening a trauma, or maybe entangling even more in and with it.&#38;nbsp;

2nd Chapter: and bark beetles mapped hidden worlds

Follow the lines under the crust. A landscape, a letter, a warm invitation

To a sphere where shape-shifters, ambivalent creatures and magical disorders meet and nest. They create new worlds, that at first glimpse might seem uncanny – Where every little thing is active and vibrant – Where borders are substituted by networks.

This exhibition is the second chapter of an exchange between eight artists which started with the package show “1st Chapter: Trying to Be a Spider” that was sent into the world in April 2021.

Instead of the spider, this time the bark beetle is our host and storyteller.
